This episode examined the life of an American Business Mogul & PHILANTHROPIST, PHIL KNIGHT and drew out some lessons that could aid you in achieving your own goals and live your dreams.

Philip Knight popularly known as PHIL KNIGHT  is a Co-Founder of the world most famous sport apparel company ; NIKE 

Nike as a famous brand today started out as a desired. 
Just like many other youths, Phil was once confused about his future, though graduated with journalism degree from the University, yet he wasn't sure what the future hold, thus he went for a year service in the US army.

There after, not yet found purpose, he decided to enrol at the Graduates Business School and in the course of his assignment, a flash of business idea struck his mind, contemplating ;
Can Japanese shoes do to German shoe,  what Japanese cameras did to German Cameras? 
And in that flash of thought he discovered his Life purpose, Phil made up his mind to journey on that path of life, Making Sport shoes, being a Mid distance runner himself right from his college days.
Though he lacked the experience of how to go about it but he kept his dream alive within him, even when he secured an employment. 
As part of the strategy, Phil travelled to Japan as a tourist but never loose the focus of his trip till he located a shoe making company with high quality but affordable shoes.
With no experience but Confidence, Phil presented himself as a shoe distributor from America, then made a proposal to the owner of the shoe company to be their distributor in America, the offer which the company owner can't resist, thus instantaneously a company was birthed called Blue RIBBON SPORTS (BRS)

With his little financial resources, PHIL KNIGHT became the sole distributor of that Japanese company in America with as little as 12pairs of shoes. 
With no store to ware his stocks, Phil turned his car to a mobile store, drove to as many sport arenas as possible to make sales. 
Thinking of expansion and larger markets, PHIL consulted his former college coach, Bill Bowerman who later became Phil partner.

With increase in their capital base, they were able to increase the stock number to 300 pairs of shoes which in return multiply their dollar returns, being able to penetrated into more markets, sales representative was also employed and that commenced BRS fame the more into the sport world,thus there was more demand than they could meet up, since the manufacturer wasn't giving them enough supplies and that led into a new thought, why they have to be more than just a distributor.

After the lapse of their contract with the Japanese company, Phil and his partner made a move into production of their own shoes.
Phil inquisitiveness led into more shoe's designs among such was CORTEX, which became so famous in the next Olympic game.

That little start up then, has became a multinational company today, not just with shoes but sports apparels at large with the world class brand name NIKE. 
NOT without it's own challenges, such as human rights group challenge of poor renumeration charges against NIKE in Asia, which was a threat to the brand and many other challenges but with focus and determination, NIKE is still standing.

LESSONS :


  • Never let what you don't have stop you from attempting your goals, just like Phil lack experience but capitalised on his Confidence to kick start his business. 
  • Start with what you have. The beginning of a famous world brand NIKE, was just 12 pairs of shoes. So don't wait till you'll have a million dollars to start your dreams. 
  • You can't do it alone.  What you know is all you know and where you are is all you can reach but with partnership and collaboration with others your business can reach into the whole universe.
